Billing Policy

Port Hedland Medical Centre (PHMC) is a private mixed billing General Practice. Mixed billing allows PHMC to continue to operate as a viable business, providing high quality services to the community now and into the future.

There are several billing models in operation at various practices throughout Australia, and the model chosen by each practice is at the discretion of management. The 3 models are:

  • Bulk billing – where all patients are bulk billed;

  • Private billing – where all patients are charged a fee for services;

  • Mixed billing – this is a combination approach, whereby some patients (who meet certain criteria) are bulk billed, and others are privately billed.

At PHMC, we do not believe that we would be able to continue operating if a majority of services were bulk billed. Similarly, we also believe that private billing all services makes healthcare inaccessible to certain people in our community. This is why we have selected the mixed billing approach.

At PHMC we bulk bill the following patients:

  • All children under 16 years of age;

  • All DVA Gold Card holders;

All patients who do not meet these 2 criteria’s should expect to pay a private fee (generally payable at the end of the consultation). Some of this private fee will usually be rebated from Medicare (for eligible patients and services).

Billing of each patient is ultimately the decision of the treating doctor, and depends on a number of factors including but not limited to practice policy, clinical presentation and length of appointment. If you do not meet the previously stated bulk-billing criteria, a bulk-billed appointment should not be expected. If you are unsure, please ask at the time of booking.

Patients failing to attend appointments or not give at least 4 hrs notice will be charged a fee
